Job Summary
Responsible for performing track surveys and right-of-way mapping work on all Amtrak-owned or maintained properties. The senior field person is responsible for all surveying activities while in the field. They coordinate field work with their colleagues in Electric Traction, Signals and Communications, Structures, Division Engineers, Engineering Production and Real Estate. They maintain the equipment. They write and organize all field notes. They develop âcut sheetsâ for construction layout.  Their work is primarily in the field, and they will be based out of either Providence RI or Groton CT.
Essential Functions
Works autonomously and safely, supervising Amtrak field survey crew or consultant-provided survey personnel in surveying field work.
Supervises and performs highly technical survey tasks using mobile surveying solutions, robotic survey equipment, GNSS receiving equipment, data collection devices, digital and optical levels; takes field notes and creates sketches
Creates survey plans for transmittal to design team members and the public
Perform track and right-of-way surveys and verify that the lines and grades of the proposed improvements are within the clearance envelopes and right-of-way boundaries. The surveys include existing track alignment data, topographic surveys in support of track designs; layout in support of track construction and renewal; record surveys of completed work; boundary line surveys along the railroad right of way.
Lays out design track geometry in the field for use by track construction and maintenance forces.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelorâs Degree required or equivalent combination of training, education and relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree

8+ years of relevant experience preferred
6 years of prior relevant experience required
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelorâs
Degree in Geomatics, Land Surveying
8-10 years of relevant, progressive
work experience in land surveying.
Professional Land Survey license or registration
Qualified in AMTRAK RWP and AMT II and MW1000
Participation in a professional survey society.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Fundamental knowledge of general civil engineering principles.
Ability to read, understand and produce engineering drawings and documents.
Ability to absorb information, think critically and make sound engineering decisions.
Willingness to learn CAD software and become a highly skilled technical draftsman.
Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel and Power Point).
Attention to detail and completeness.
Valid driverâs license

During the initial onboarding period, the Surveyor will spend up to 75% of working time in the field to
become familiar with the railroad territory,

Amtrak railroad surveying practices and get acquainted with the Field Survey Team.
Up to 30% travel may be required.
Occasional night work may be required.
Field work is performed outdoors on active railroad tracks and construction sites, and may involve exposure to weather, uneven terrain, and typical construction hazards.
Must follow all Amtrak safety policies and railroad operational rules.
The salary/hourly range is $94,300.00 â $122,256.00. Pay is based on several factors including but not limited to education, work experience, certifications, etc. Depending on an employeeâs assigned worksite or location, Amtrak may consider a geo-pay differential to be applied to the employeeâs base salary. Amtrak may offer additional incentive and pay programs to recognize and reward our employees, including a short-term incentive bonus based upon factors such as individual and company performance that is commensurate with the level of the position and/or long-term incentive plan compensation.
