**A day in this role**

You clock in at the rail shop, review the day’s work orders, and team up with an experienced lead. Early tasks might include supporting material handling for repairs and setting up mechanical hand tools. As the day progresses, you’ll perform limited welding under close supervision, help remove and replace uncoupling and brake levers, and participate in safe car jacking to access components. You’ll dismantle couplers, assist with supervised truck repair, and update AEI tags. Along the way, you continue building your welding foundation and prepare to certify in 1G flat and 2G horizontal railcar positions.
### **What you’ll do**
* Learn basic stick welding knowledge under mentorship.
* Assist with general rail car repair operations.
* Support material handling during repairs.
* Operate shop equipment and mechanical hand tools.
* Perform limited welding under close supervision.
* Complete routine maintenance work.
* Develop basic railcar repair skills through on\-the\-job experience.
* Help with overall rail shop maintenance.
* Carry out basic cutting and welding.
* Remove and replace uncoupling levers.
* Remove and dismantle couplers.
* Remove and replace brake levers.
* Execute safe car jacking procedures.
* Perform supervised truck repair.
* Remove and update AEI tags.
* Work toward certifying rail car welding positions (1G Flat and 2G Horizontal).
### **What you bring**
* Experience level: 1–3 years.
* Preferred: 1 year of mechanic experience, 1 year using hand tools, 1 year MIG/Stick welding, and 1 year brake repair.
* High School diploma or GED.
* Proficiency in troubleshooting and mechanical troubleshooting.
* Skills in soldering, preventive maintenance \& inspection, and engine repair.
* Maintenance and repair skills for mechanical systems \& components.
* Experience with vehicle \& fleet welding; familiarity with diesel \& heavy equipment systems.
* Equipment repair \& maintenance mindset with strong safety focus.
### **Schedule \& employment type**
Full\-time position with 10\-hour shifts.
