Job Description
**Job Summary:**
Responsible for the operation of trains and moving cars in a safe and timely manner that responds to the customer’s needs. Place cars to facilitate loading and unloading and the makeup and breakdown on trains in a rail yard, industrial plant, or similar location.
**Essential Duties and Responsibilities:**
* Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA)
* Review and communicate instructions from dispatchers/general managers with locomotive engineer and train crew.
* Inspect all equipment on cars prior to departures.
* Receive and transmit information by radio.
* Read and understand bulletins, work orders and switch lists.
* Assist and coordinate the switching of cars, including coupling and uncoupling cars and lifting out coupling device.
* Work with customers to ensure accurate movement and placement of cars.
* Maintain awareness of surrounding area and suspicious activity to ensure rail safety.
* Comprehend color signals and systems.
* Quickly respond (with hand, finger or foot) to visual symbols, signals or displays (sound, light, picture, etc.)
* Conforms with and abides by all regulations, policies, work procedures, instruction, and all safety requirements.
* Provides a “Customer Service” attitude when interacting with internal and external customers while accomplishing work, production, and achieving quality standards.
* Maintains a clean, orderly, and safe workstation/environment at all times.
* Other duties as assigned.
**Education and Experience:**
* Education: High School or Equivalent
* Experience**:** Less than 3 years
* Must possess valid driver’s license and CDL endorsement.

* Ability to demonstrate a commitment to safety and compliance of all FRA rules.
* Ability to Inspect all track structures and anything likely to endanger or delay train movements.
* Ability to make minor repairs and assist in coordinating and making emergency repairs.
* Ability to detect and report changing track conditions.
* Ability to operate heavy equipment.
* Demonstrate auditory and visual acuity.

**Physical Demands and Work Environment:**
* Regularly required to sit; use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms. Regularly required to stand; climb stairs or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
